Services - Social Work ASSISTING PATIENTS - SOCIAL WORK SERVICES  Chronic illness may cause you to be out of work for a period of time resulting in reduced or limited income and financial difficulties. If you are dealing with a Workers' Compensation claims and its' bureaucratic system, it may be another source of long term frustration. All the changes you may experience can increase stress in relationships and social situations. It is not common for individuals with chronic illness to experience feelings of anxiety, depression, suicidal tendencies, reduced self-confidence, anger, loss of purpose/identity and control over their situation.  Social worker services expand our ability to assist our patients as they make necessary adjustments in their lives to cope with chronic illness and disability. Our social work services are short term and issue-focused, directed by the needs of the patient. Sessions are focused on helping clients build self-esteem, empowerment and work towards improving their coping abilities when faced with stressful situations or particular problems, tasks, feelings or thoughts.  Social work services are offered at no charge to OHCC patients and their families by face to face sessions, tele-mental health consultations, telephone sessions and support group meetings.  The OHCC social worker is licensed by the State of New York with a Master's degree in Social Work.
